Style and attribution rules

Every surface that shows an Updraft map or layer shows this line:

© Updraft · © OpenStreetMap contributors · © OpenMapTiles · Copernicus DEM

Updraft styles carry the line themselves (MapLibre attribution box); the raster TileJSON has it too.

Rules

  1. Visible: the line is on or right below the map, at a readable size and in every theme; it is not hidden, not only in a collapsed menu or on a separate "licences" screen.
  2. Linked (web): "© Updraft" links to this page or to https://updraftmaps.com, "© OpenStreetMap contributors" to https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright. On mobile, tapping the line may open these links.
  3. Layers on their own too: when the thermal grid, skyways, take-off and landing sites or a region profile are shown without the Updraft base map (on another base map or in a chart), "© Updraft" is still credited.
  4. Changed style: you may change the style; the attribution line stays and the changed map must not look endorsed by Updraft.
  5. Prints and images: in screenshots, videos and prints the line is inside the image or right below it.

Conditions of the free year

For the first year the API and tiles are free. The conditions:

  • The attribution line is visible under the rules above (required).
  • Keys are used only in the application they were issued for; they are not passed on or sold.
  • Tiles are served by Updraft and kept according to the cache headers of the response; they are not bulk downloaded and redistributed from another server. Region packs exist for offline use (region packs).
  • Limits guard against abuse (Rate limits); a key that exceeds them or breaks the rules may be revoked.
  • No attempt is made to single out people from the layers (Privacy).

Terms for the end of the free year and after are announced to key holders before they apply.

Licence notes

  • OpenStreetMap (ODbL 1.0): the tiles are a produced work of OSM data; attribution is required. If you extract OSM data from the tiles and publish it as a database, that database is shared under the ODbL.
  • OpenMapTiles schema (CC-BY 4.0): the layer and field layout of the base tiles; hence "© OpenMapTiles" in the line. The Updraft style is not derived from the OpenMapTiles styles.
  • Copernicus DEM: contours, hillshade and terrain are produced from Copernicus GLO-30. Put the full notice on your about or licences page: "Copernicus DEM © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved".
  • Wind data (DWD, CC BY 4.0): the wind sectors of the thermal grid are derived from Deutscher Wetterdienst's ICON-EU model data. If you use the thermal layer, put this notice on your about or licences page: "Wind data: Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), ICON-EU, CC BY 4.0; processed with Open-Meteo, derived into wind sectors per flight."
  • Updraft layers: layers derived from pilots' flights are © Updraft.
